Keighley might be missing a few players here and there but good things are happening at Rose Cottage.

Director of rugby Graeme Sheffield said: “We put four teams out on Saturday and all won. That must be the first time that has happened for an extremely long time.

“It just shows what a good job our coaches are doing with the lower teams – Chris Cooper with the fourth team, Loz Marklew and Mark Hurtley with the third team and Robin Hebden and Michael Feather with the second team.”

Keighley first XV’s defence is again producing decent statistics.

They have only conceded 40 points in four matches in SSE Yorkshire Division One but on Saturday they are at top-of-the-table Driffield, who scored 74 points against Dinnington in their last home game.

“That takes some doing against any side,” said Sheffield, “and is one reason why we were concentrating on the tackle bags on Tuesday night. "The other is that we haven’t quite hit our straps in defence as we did two years ago.”

Meanwhile, Keighley centre Marco Ferrazzano has failed to make the 30-man Italian squad for their Rugby League World Cup European Zone Qualifiers next month against Russia, Serbia and the Lebanon.

The former Keighley Albion and Cougars player was included in the Italy A squad for warm-up matches in the Midlands.

Sheffield said: “We gave Marco time off to attend the trials and we feel for him that he hasn’t made the squad but on the other hand we are pleased that we will have him available for us more often next month.”
