Caldy 59, Otley 25

Down 31-10 at half-time, it took strong words from coach Gary Walker at half-time to rouse Otley yesterday, reminding them there was still a National League Two North bonus point available, and they rose to the occasion with style.

A nasty injury to lock Simon Willett in the warm-up - a dislocated thumb piercing flesh - distracted this young team, and more injuries entailed debuts for two more promising schoolboys.

The reorganisation left them unprepared for the opposition’s quick start, a penalty into the corner and ball quickly down the line for winger Liam Devanney to stroll over.

Nine minutes later he became the provider, an inside pass to flanker Harry Broadbent but Otley replied with a classic try, Daniel Yemm racing in from 40 metres, fly half Nick Coupland converting and then levelling the scores with a penalty on 24 minutes.

Caldy then showed why they are high in the league with good running and support work, adding further tries - a second for Broadbent and two for centre Gavin Roberts, and they struck swiftly after the break, winger Andrew Souter finding space on the left and No 8 Josiah Dickinson powering over.

But Otley found some form, centre Andrew Rhodes and winger James Wood making it look easy, and James Twomey came in with a trademark try to grab the vital fourth try.

Capricious bounces from huge kicks downfield then enabled Caldy to add two more tries, prop John Parker and sub Alec Smith being the beneficiaries, while fly half Richard Vasey had a good day with seven conversions.
