Rosslyn Park 27, Wharfedale 32 The tension has eased for Wharfedale after these precious five points earned at Priory Lane left the club within touching distance of National One survival.
They are not quite there yet – but just a single league point is now required from two matches for mathematical certainty.
Once again, it was a late score that secured reward for the spirited Greens.
With six minutes left, Rob Baldwin charged through a gap in the home defence, offloading on the 22 to David Hughes for the flanker to touch down under the posts.
The lead had thus changed hands for the fifth time in this tense but vibrant game as the Dalesmen held out.
The opening quarter was a struggle for the visitors as Park, intent on banishing memories of a heavy defeat the previous week at Blaydon, surged forward.
The Greens were grateful to centre Tom Davidson for his penalties (three and 15 minutes) that kept them in touch after Ed Lewis-Pratt had scored a converted try and stand-off Ross Laidlaw had kicked a penalty.
Wharfedale recovered and, by half-time, had an 18-10 advantage. A splendidly executed drive from a line-out culminated in hooker Steve Graham’s corner try (25min), capitalised on by Davidson’s fine conversion.
Winger Sam Edgerley’s converted try (44min) trimmed the Greens’ lead to a single point.
Then came a stroke of luck for Wharfedale. A Park back, under no pressure, dropped the ball, allowing Andy Hodgson to hack ahead and score close to the posts, Davidson converting.
A Laidlaw penalty (61min) was followed by Lewis-Pratt’s second converted try to regain the lead for Park.
But the Baldwin-Hughes double act ensured a happy trip home for Dale.
