Wath 5, Baildon 17 Baildon ended their season in style with a magnificent victory over champions Wath.

The victory had an air of irony about it as the hosts, who were the only team to beat the Jenny Laners at home all season, had their own unbeaten home record taken by the highly-committed visitors.

The first try came on five minutes when Danny Pollard cut inside a defender and sold an outrageous dummy before feeding Jason Ah Tong, who touched down near the posts.

Wath replied on 14 minutes but Baildon hit back after flanker Matt Williams had carried the ball strongly, deep into visiting territory, and supplied scrum half James Dawson with a try-scoring pass on 32 minutes.

The powerful Wath pack, who have been such a big factor in the South Yorkshire side’s promotion, came out with more purpose in the second half but failed to gain ground against Baildon’s tenacious and gritty forwards.

Wath opted to use their back line and this change of tactics proved to be their downfall when, on 68 minutes, Ah Tong put in a bone-crunching tackle on his opposite number. It caused the recipient to drop the ball and allow winger Hayden Lister to pounce for his 11th try of the campaign, improved by brother Nick.

Baildon’s win kept them in second place but Goole and Bramley both have two games in hand.
