Bridlington 28, Keighley 27
It proved a difficult day at the seaside for a somewhat disjointed Keighley team yesterday in Yorkshire Division One.
They found themselves under early pressure, a well- struck penalty from winger Steven Mellonby easing Bridlington into the lead, only for Keighley to level soon after with a penalty from Alex Brown.
Keighley, unable to find any rhythm, were pressured into errors which eventually led to a brace of tries tries for Mellonby, one of which he converted. Keighley responded with a further penalty from Brown and some powerful forward play, which gave captain Leigh Sugden a chance to power his way over the line.
But Bridlington finished the half strongly with a well-worked try from speedy centre Ben Johnson.
In the second half, Keighley roused themselves and took the lead with a further three penalties from Brown and a try for Micky Phillips, after some excellent approach work from full back Danny McGee, Brown adding the conversion.
Keighley had the chance to extend their lead with a penalty in front of the posts. However, they spurned the opportunity by taking a quick tap and go which led to nothing - much to the relief of the home team. Bridlington dug deep and, through good drives and ball retention, gave full back Martin Robinson the opportunity to drive over the line.
With time running out, Keighley managed to put themselves in difficulty in midfield, leading to a penalty for Bridlington.
A comment from one of the Keighley players caused the referee to march them back a further ten metres, and gave Mellonby an easier shot at goal, which he gratefully accepted.
In the few minutes remaining, Keighley threw everything they had into attack but were unable to score, giving resilient Bridlington a deserved victory.
