Cleckheaton 19, Rochdale 22

A drop goal from Steve Collins with four minutes left saw Cleck fail to climb out of the bottom two.

The signs weren’t good for the hosts when Collins kicked a penalty on two minutes.

Cleck’s Iain Gordon replied with a penalty soon afterwards but Collins responded with his second.

The Moorenders had a clear try chance on 26 minutes when Owen Edwards made a break from halfway, only to lose the ball with the line in sight.

However, they did go over from a line-out five metres out following a pick and drive. Quick ball out to Pete Murphy saw him pass to Ross Hayden, who crossed, and Gordon kicked an easy goal to put Cleck in front.

The home side’s habit of conceding penalties saw Collins pull three points back. And Will Van Zyl burst through the Cleck defence for a try, Collins converting put Rochdale 16-10 up.

Cleck started the second half well with two penalties but Carl Mason was the first of three sin-binnings as a Collins penalty edged his side back in front.

Cleck levelled with a three-pointer themselves before Gordon and Ryan Piercy were given yellow cards. They weathered the storm but Collins’ trusty boot clinched the points.
