Esher 92, Otley 0

Otley’s long journey into Surrey was not the preparation required as they were caught cold, once again conceding early tries.

This time, unlike of late, they never managed a reply.

The confident league leaders, requiring just two more wins to ensure promotion, went into the lead on just 45 seconds when centre Neil Taylor found a gap, centre Seb Jewell kicking the first of 11 conversions.

Despite periods which suggested an Otley revival, the hosts were hardly under pressure and went on to amass 14 tries.

No 8 Shawn Renwick charged through from a tap penalty before handing on to winger James Copsey, and provider turned scorer when the home pack drove over.

The next try came by the same method, this time prop Colm Hannon grounding.

After Otley had a short spell of supremacy without reward, a good run by No 6 James Tubesi set up scrum half Andy Garner for another try.

Renwick and Garner, from a line-out, combined to send Jewell in and full back Jonny Hylton, breaking from his 22, set off up-field and quick handling left Garner with a simple run in for his second to secure a 47-0 lead at the break.

The second half was a mirror image of the first, with Otley having their moments, but Esher, the bonus point long secured, enjoying themselves with immaculate rugby.

England Under-20 winger Sam Smith helped himself to a hat-trick, while Renwick and Taylor added a further try each.

Replacement prop Tom Lozides did the business from yet more excellent forward approach play and Jewell added his second to give him an impressive 32-point haul.

With four home games out of the remaining five, Otley will need to harness all their resilience to retain their League One status.

The Cross Greeners remain third from bottom on 43 points.

They have shown they possess the necessary skill but just need to add the confidence.
