Cleckheaton 27, Beverley 10

Joe Masserella’s 84th-minute try gave Cleck their first five-point win of the season – and it was much deserved.

Beverley started well but Cleck kept them pinned in their half with some strong defence.

Iain Gordon’s penalty went wide after nine minutes but he made up for the miss soon after with a long-distance kick.

Beverley had a chance to level with a similar kick but Goran Jelencic’s effort was wayward.

But on one of the visitors’ few trips into Cleck’s half, a cheeky chip over the defence gave Alex Forth chance to run in under the posts, Mike Kilgannon converting.

Cleck hit straight back as a catch-and-drive from Carl Mason ended in a try.

The hosts had to withstand early second-half pressure from Beverley but added to their score in the 51st minute with a run from Gordon, who in turn passed to Ross Hayden for a try in the corner. Gordon’s conversion made it 15-7.

A penalty from Kilgannon pulled three points back, but it was Cleck who had the upper hand for the rest of the game with tries from Matt Burrows, and Masserella, plus a conversion from Gordon.

The comfortable win moved the Bradford side within two points of fourth-bottom Rochdale.
