Wheatley Hills 17, Keighley 9

This Yorkshire Division One encounter yesterday was hard fought.

In the initial stages, leaders Wheatley Hills were determined to use their muscular forwards to full advantage, early pressure telling and fly half Storey landing an easy penalty.

Keighley stood up to the bombardment well, however, and mounted a series of attacks.

A charged-down kick by Alex Brown unfortunately went dead before he could touch it down.

Although they contested well, not protecting the ball in the contact area gave Wheatley Hills free ball and a gift of a try for full back Sanderson, converted by Storey.

With the game slipping away from them, Keighley doubled their efforts and camped on the opposition line.

All they had to show for the pressure was a Brown penalty.

In the second half, Brown landed two further penalties.

However, some slick handling by Wheatley Hills’s Storey put powerful wing forward Buckenham into space for a well-taken try.

Storey converted and effectively finished the game.
