Old Brodleians 22, Cleckheaton 22
A last-minute try by blindside flanker-turned centre Danny Vento, which was converted by former Cleckheaton player Ollie Akroyd, earned Old Brodleians a draw in their annual Fred Scott Trophy match today.
However, it had looked as if two breakaway tries were going to give the visitors the spoils outright.
Having fallen behind to tries by fly half Aaron Flowers in the fifth minute and Sam Hoyland 26 minutes later, trophy holders Cleckheaton finally got on the scoreboard close to half-time when hooker Ed Chappelow forced his way over.
The North Division One side then took a firm grip on the try-scoring, although two of the three second-half efforts almost came from their own line.
Firstly Cleckheaton, who kicked away too much possession in the first half, were defending a series of Brods drives when the ball obligingly popped up for 17-year-old winger Tom Clough to collect and run virtually the length of the field to score in the 48th minute.
In the 59th minute, guest scrum half Neil Chivers scored a solo breakaway try, which Heath’s Ryan Piper converted, and the lead became 12 points when the same scorer obligingly gave a try-scoring pass to his brother, prop Mark, who was also involved in the move as it passed halfway.
But Yorkshire Division One leaders Brods, whose 33-match unbeaten league record was halted at Heath last Saturday, bounced back to draw with tries by centre Jonny Hotham and that late effort by the weaving Vento.
It made up for their 10-0 defeat last season.
