Problems above and below ground forced Wibsey to call off their Yorkshire Division Five C fixture at home to Pontefract Pythons yesterday.

Wibsey's joint secretary Paul Garside said: "Our posts at Northfield Road blew down in the gales and then a hole appeared in our other pitch at Beldon Lane.

"The hole was either due to a collapsed drain or possibly on old bell-pit mine caving in.

"Jer Lane have had two or three of the old mines collapse on the cricket ground in the past.

"It was lucky fellow joint secretary Steve Rose and myself noticed the sunken ground when we were doing our dog-muck patrol.

"A quick prod with my spade and it was through. There could have been a nasty injury caused or, at the very least, something quite amusing."

Garside added: "Hopefully Bradford Council will have Beldon Lane sorted for next week and we hope to have a new set of posts up shortly at Northfield Road.

"We have a new set almost ready to go. We were going to erect them in the summer. It looks like we'll have to bring that forward."
