Westoe 47, Cleckheaton 0

Cleckheaton, who were without No 8 Ryan Burrows, who has rejoined Rotherham, and scrum half and skipper Dominic Castle (back spasm), were put to the sword by Westoe's new fly half Sam Rasche on a wet and windy afternoon.

An early downhill drive from the powerful home pack had Cleck under pressure in this North Division One fixture and within three minutes they hosts had notched a a pushover try in the corner, Rasche converting from out wide.

Cleck looked like they were going to pull points back with the backs, only for a loose pass to let them down.

The strong Westoe pack put Keith Woods over the line, Rasche converting again in the 15th minute.

With the visitors again under the cosh, poor defence let David Haswell in for an easy try three minutes later, Rasche again improving.

With Rasche using the crossfield wind to the full, plus the back-up of a quick group of three-quarters, Westoe were in control.

Against this, Cleckheaton again spilled the ball in Westoe's 22 and they were made to pay, Mark Olugbodie crossing for a try after 24 minutes, despite two suspiciously forward-looking passes.

Rasche inevitably converted and, although scrum half Adam Falkner took the home defence by surprise in a 30-metre break, he lacked support.

Late in the half, with Cleck again suffering, West scored a pushover try under the posts and, yes, that man Rasche added the extra two points.

The second half started much like the first, with Cleck having to defend from the off, but some strong work kept Westoe at bay.

Rasche's boot kept pushing Cleckheaton back and on the hour Westoe claimed yet another pushover score, Rasche tagging on the formality of the extras.

To their credit, the visitors' forwards battled hard against a strong pack, with Mark Sergeant and one or two others having a good game, but to finish off a poor afternoon for both Cleckheaton's team and their supporters, Woods went in for a try after what looked like another forward pass in the dying minutes, Haswell's kick going wide.
