Otley 46, Westcombe Park 8

For 62 minutes yesterday, Otley had control of this National League Two game without being able to put away a team they beat comfortably back in September.

Alarm bells began to ring when the visitors from Kent reduced the deficit to just seven points by adding a try to their earlier penalty.

A tenth-minute penalty from Adam Greendale set Otley on their way, but a serious shoulder dislocation to in-form No 8 Matt Stockdale upset their rhythm.

And things weren't helped in the second half when his back-row partner James Tiffany suffered a similar injury.

That meant Paul Williams going to No 6 - he is no stranger to that role - but alongside him were the unlikely figures of prop Steve Trethewey and hooker Ben Steele.

Nevertheless, Otley carved out ample opportunities, only to see them squandered.

The exception was in the 19th minute when flanker Xavier Andre sliced through to put winger Steve Parsons in at the corner, Greendale added the conversion.

However, a knock-on and a pass to the opposition, with the line open on each occasion, was more typical of what Otley were serving up.

And sure enough, West-combe Park got themselves into the game with a penalty from fly half James Whittingham.

The story remained the same until the 56th minute when, having failed with an attempted pushover and having Parsons held up over the line, the ball was swung back across field for Kyle Dench to score.

But a knock-on at the restart, compounded by penalties, had Otley back on their line, where prop Stephen Croall was driven over.

This proved to be the catalyst for all-out Otley attack and Park were torn apart by five tries in 14 minutes.

Jonathan Buchanan got a brace - a gap from short range and two minutes later following up his own kick ahead to outpace the defence.

From the kick off, Greendale's short grubber was collected by Ian Shuttleworth, the forwards then driving Howard Parr over.

The last try was a reward for several strong runs by Robin Kitching - one which earned a yellow card for a high tackle by replacement Adam Preocanin in the 70th minute.

Kitching raced in from 35 metres to beat the final whistle, Greendale (2) and James Murray adding the conversions, as Otley remain three points clear at the top of the table.
