Bradford Salem 7, Baildon 15

What was mainly a young Baildon side suffered a significant blow while winning this club match today against a second-string Bradford Salem outfit at Shay Lane.

The visitors' skipper Mark Coultas chipped a bone in his knee and damaged ligaments after 32 minutes and was taken to Bradford Royal Infirmary during the second half.

However, there was no further news of Salem's casualty last night.

Strong-running centre Marc Helliwell was taken to hospital with a suspected broken leg after being carried off on a stretcher in the 48th minute.

Baildon's first-team secretary Phil Wilson said: "Mark (Coultas) could be out for two to three months."

It took the gloss off a fine performance by Baildon's youngsters in what was, particularly in the second half, at times a fractious contest.

Wilson added: "It is hard work getting some of the senior players onto the pitch but the youngsters make my job more exciting.

"If we can keep them together over the next two or three years then we should have a very good side.

"The absence of some of the senior players has made it easier for them to get into the first team but the main thing is that they are good enough.

"About half of the team were teenagers. For example, Dale Taberner was playing only his second game at hooker and prop Adam Hewitt, who got our first try, is only 18.

"Jack Aaron is doing well at scrum half and Jon Picken on the wing has been a regular for the first team and is only 17, and Will Clayton is doing well too. He got our second try.

"And JJ O'Connell got the breakaway try on his debut in the 72nd minute."

Salem's points came from a try by skipper Dave Lawrence and a conversion by veteran full back Andy Dalton. Their only first-teamer was Sam Cummins.
