Birkenhead Park 27, Cleckheaton 0

The one-sided scoreline didn't reflect the game between these two evenly-matched teams in the EDF Energy Intermediate Cup third round north tie.

But the penalty count went heavily in the hosts' favour and three sin-binnings severely hindered Cleck.

They were under pressure from the start, with Park camped in their 22 from the word go.

Park looked to capitalise on the first sin-bin of the afternoon when Cleck's John Bentley was yellow-carded in the 18th minute but four minutes later, Park's Jon Sewell was also sent to the cooler.

The first chance came in the 24th minute when Dave Hall missed an easy penalty. Cleckheaton cleared their line on the re-start with Ryan Burrows' break into halfway.

It looked like it was going to be 0-0 at half-time but a charged-down kick let Park's winger score in the corner.

The second half started with Park again in the ascendancy but the game was turned on its head when Burrows was sin-binned on 45 minutes and Carl Mason followed him three minutes later.

Cleckheaton, to their credit, pushed Park back but a quick break by their forwards saw them score a try in the corner minutes later.

A pushover try followed and, in the 62nd minute, Park sealed the game with a try under the posts, Hall converting.

Cleck had the better of the last quarter but couldn't break through and Park scored another try with five minutes remaining.

To rub salt into the wounds, Burrows crossed the line for Cleckheaton in the dying minutes only for the try to be disallowed.
