Yorkshire Silver Trophy
Baildon 9, Whitby 27
BAILDON, fielding a mix and match side, felt hard one by after a couple of refereeing decisions went against them in this quarter-final.
Playing with the wind and the slope in their favour in the first half, the Jenny Laners were leading 9-0 courtesy of three superb curling penalties from fly half Oli Waddington.
It looked as if the Yorkshire Division Three side would take that advantage into the break but, with five minutes to go, the Durham & Northumberland Division Three leaders switched from trying to break through near the ruck to shipping the ball out wide.
Baildon thought they had held up the effort but the referee awarded a try, giving Whitby momentum going into the second half.
With their kicker off form, the visitors' decision to run their penalties bore fruit with several tries.
Opting to keep the ball in their forwards, Baildon mounted a comeback and thought they had scored a try when they hit a post pad but again the try was not awarded, snuffing out the potential fightback.
