Old Grovians 35, Leeds Medics & Dentists 46
Old Grovians’ director of rugby Martin Whitcombe enjoyed a rare luxury in this free-flowing, high-scoring SSE Yorkshire Division Three match at Elm Tree Farm.
“It is the first time since the beginning of the season that we have basically been able to field the same team two weeks running,” said the former Keighley, Skipton and Bradford & Bingley coach.
“We are starting to get over our setbacks and our injuries and we scored five tries in good conditions against Leeds Medics and Dentists, who play a similar style of rugby to us and are a very good team.
“Along with Goole, they are the top two teams in the division. We got five points the week before against Hemsworth and picked up another one here.
“We have picked up points two weeks running and this means that we can now take that into the match against Harrogate Pythons next weekend and, in the longer term, to the second half of the season.”
The personal honours for Old Grovians went to left winger Dion Hendricks, who scored three tries but the visitors sealed the points with a try a minute from time in a game that was notable for some excellent lines of running from the backs.
Whitcombe added: “The team spirit is good, the enthusiasm is good, we have the traditional values of a rugby club, and are all the better for that.”
