Old Crossleyans 5, Cleckheaton 26
This was a very committed SSE North One East performance from a very organised and motivated Cleckheaton team.
However, it was the home side who opened the scoring in the fifth minute when fly half Chris Jones spotted a gap in the Cleckheaton defence and raced to the line for a fine individual effort.
The conversion was missed but the visitors knew that they needed to be accurate and aggressive in defence.
The early score against them seemed to rally Cleckheaton, and they began to dominate most phases of play.
Four first-half tries from Matt Piper, Ryan Piercy and a brace from winger James Wilson, plus three conversions from the ever-dangerous Ross Hayden, emphasised the visitors' superiority.
Strangely the second half did not live up to the standards of the first and, as the conditions worsened and Crossleyans tried manfully to close the gap by running the ball at every opportunity, Cleckheaton maintained their stranglehold and ran out deserved winners.
