Burley 29 Old Grovians 28

Old Grovians’ director of rugby Martin Whitcombe had mixed emotions after this derby.

He said: “We led for most of the game and it would have been nice to have got five points away from home.

“Anthony Griffin got three tries for us and you must be unlucky if you get get three tries and end up on the losing side.

“But, bearing in mind the players we had missing – our chairman Dan Gullick had to play at hooker and two or three others were drafted in, such as Anthony Cadman – if you had said beforehand ‘you will get two points from this game’, I would have accepted it.”

The other points for the visitors came from a Joe Sowden try and four conversions by Ben Brown.

Grovians’ two points – one for four tries and one for losing by seven points or fewer – lifted them one place to ninth.
