Queensbury marched through to the second round of the PENNINE LEAGUE PRESIDENT’S CUP with a 28-6 home victory over Crigglestone All Blacks.
The hosts initially had their work cut out to stay in the tie against determined opponents whose well-drilled defence kept them at bay.
But after falling behind to a converted try, Ash Ryan made the whitewash to close the first half at 6-4 to the All Blacks. Queensbury then went on to dominate events after the restart, with Joe Swain and Josh Naylor both posting a brace of tries. Wingman Scott Swann added all the extras, leaving player-coach Andy Senior purring following a cracking cup performance that bodes well for the next chapter.
Birkenshaw powered into round two with a 44-32 home win over old rivals Westgate Wolves. Birky went into the sheds 20-14 up following a splendid first half and kept their nerve when they was reduced to 11 fit men late in the game.
Matt Gowland was the star of the show with two tries and six goals, aided and abetted by Damien Smith (2), Liam Darvill (2), Paul Bancroft and Alan Binns.
Clayton bowed out 32-10 at home to Halifax Irish, while West Bowling also fell at the first hurdle 36-18 against New Earswick All Blacks at the Bankfoot Oval. Bowling was always on the back foot and trailed the York side by eight points at the interval.
Full back Tom Martin, wingman Mike Batty, centre Joe Simpson and prop Ryan Patchett made the chalk, with stand-off Todd Carter kicking their solitary goal.
Division One leaders Bank Top Harriers came within a whisker of causing an upset in the narrow 16-14 defeat at Keighley, who gave their least convincing display for several weeks.
Hooker Gareth Walker was in inspirational form to prompt Harriers tries from Paul Priestley, Mike Hustler and Finn Lamont, leaving stand-off Adam Mitchell to pitch in with one conversion.
Keighley winger Alex Young crossed inside two minutes but they were grateful to further tries from Matthew Mount and Daz McNulty. Jamie Donnelly supplied the extra points.
West Bowling A won their ANDREW BENNETT MEMORIAL TROPHY first-round tie 28-22 at Victoria Rangers.
This followed touchdowns from Martin Tordoff (2), Glenn Barraclough, Elliott Cousins, Chris Curtain and Joe Ollerenshaw, with Ryan Wilkinson kicking two goals.
Undercliffe Wildboars played their worst 80 minutes of the season to date but still managed to outclass Underbank Rangers A 42-10 in the opening round of the PENNINE LEAGUE SUPPLEMENTARY CUP.
Tries were posted by Justin Hunter (2), Matt Pitman, Steve Ingleson, Paul Cross, Matthew Feather, Jake Butterworth and Josh Page.
Queensbury A racked up a 74-10 cricket score to ease past Cowling Harlequins, with Michael Boocock scoring a try and kicking nine goals for a personal tally of 22 points.
Andy Walker and Darren Brown both crossed for hat-tricks, backed up by Kelvin Daulat (2), Joe Bryan (2), Steve Montgomery, Sam Cheney and Matthew Wood.
