A young Queensbury side fought valiantly before going down 42-18 at Halifax Irish in the Pennine League Premier Division .

Try-scorers for Bury were Charlie Gallagher, Tony Clarke and Jack Evison but it wasn’t enough to overcome a bigger, more experienced Halifax outfit.

Man of the match Sam Cheeney was inspirational while Sam Evison also shone on his debut.

In the Championship Division , Bank Top Harriers proved too strong for King Cross Park, winning 32-4.

Coach Simon Mitchell will have been pleased with his side’s performance, particularly in the pack, as they won the early battle up front.

The Harriers’ quality back line then stepped into the fray, with centre Jason Gelder bagging a hat-trick, full back Finn Lamont a brace and winger Mark Bailey also crossing. Adam Mitchell helped himself to four goals.

In Division One , Birkenshaw comfortably beat Huddersfield side Newsome Panthers 56-28.

Birky had too much firepower for the visitors, running in 11 tries.

Chris Clough was a constant thorn in the Panthers’ side, helping himself to a hat-trick. Other try-scorers for Birky were Gavin Mezals (2), Damian Smith (2), Alan Binns, Adam Lazenby, Mathew Brickley and captain Matt Honeysett. Mathew Gowland struck six goals.

Wyke opened their Division Two campaign with a thrilling 30-24 victory over Emley Moor.

James Dewhirst caught the eye with his two tries while man of the match Warren Pitman crowned an excellent display with a fine try. Other try-scorers were John Rayner and Ryan Exley.

In Division Three , Odsal Sedbergh looked on the way to an opening-day victory against West Leeds, only for their lead to be overhauled in the final quarter.

Sedge were leading 22-12 with 20 minutes to play thanks to tries from Oliver Priestley (2), Kaine McEwan, Andy Gabriel and Robert Priestley. However, defensive errors were to cost them as West Leeds ran in 22 unanswered points to win 34-22.

Undercliffe claimed the bragging rights by defeating close rivals Victoria Rangers 50-22 in Division Four .

Coach Richard Cousins was delighted with his team's performance given their rise of two divisions from last season.

Full back Aidan Scully opened the scoring before caption Ryan Dean also crossed. Kaz Ahmed collected a brace and was ably assisted by James Dean, Paul Cross and Jake Butterworth. Scully and Liam Jarvis kicked two and three goals respectively.
