Queensbury were desperately unlucky to finish empty-handed from a 12-4 Pennine League home defeat against PREMIER DIVISION table-toppers Drighlington.
Second-bottom ’Bury took the lead with a well-worked try from centre Trevor Stead and set about the task of causing an upset with gusto.
They restricted the classy Drig outfit to a narrow 12-4 advantage with 20 minutes to go and gave them a real fright when they had a try disallowed for a forward pass.
The outstanding Ben Naylor then fell to an ankle tap with the line at his mercy and a continued assault in the visitors’ red zone continued right up to the final whistle.
Injury-ravaged West Bowling lost 32-18 at home to fellow BARLA Yorkshire Cup quarter-finalists Hunslet Old Boys, who are second in the table.
Bowling will want to quickly forget a first half that saw them change ends 26-0 down.
But they rallied sufficiently well in the second stanza to post tries from Nigel Halmshaw, Ben Heald and Mike Batty, with Lee Innes slotting over the conversions.
Bank Top Harriers remain top of DIVISION ONE but only just after a narrow 26-24 win at basement side Lindley Swifts.
The Harriers recovered from an 18-6 interval deficit to finish ahead thanks to tries by Nathan Willans, Finn Lamont, Mike Hustler and Carl Brian, while Adam Mitchell was crucially on target five times with the boot.
Birkenshaw’s return to winning ways continued with a 24-18 success at Dodworth.
Birky eased 10-0 up after touchdowns from Ross Grattan and Damien Smith, one of which was converted by Matt Gowland.
Dodworth then nosed in front 12-10 before Gowland and a length-of-the-field special from centre Alan Binns restored the advantage.
Smith completed a brace but the hosts had the last say bang on full time.
Wyke wingman Mike Lyons picked an ideal time to post his first two tries for the club in their 26-20 home win against Illingworth in DIVISION TWO.
The hosts were behind all the game, despite touchdowns from hooker Ian Watkinson and centre John Rayner, and it was left to the resourceful Lyons to make sure of the spoils when he pounced on two kicks late in the proceedings.
Maltese international duo Liam and Dom Grima made try-scoring debuts in Odsal Sedbergh A’s 62-18 home win over bottom side Cowling Harlequins in DIVISION SIX.
Older brother Liam also joined in, bagging a brace alongside efforts from John Belcher (2), Chris Lawrence and Ryan Proctor.
