Wibsey Warriors 42, Clayton 10
Full back Nick Fontaine posted two tries to spur Wibsey Warriors to a telling victory in their Pennine League Premier Division derby against Clayton at Northfield Road.
Injury-hit Clayton started as if they meant business, with wingman Jake Patchett bundled into touch at the corner flag, while full back Sam Goodchild was cool as a cucumber when clearing his line in fine style as the hosts counter-attacked.
The Warriors took the lead when centre Steve Redman was held out wide and when the ball was worked to the blind side, Fontaine joined the line to reach the chalk.
A succession of one-man drives and a plethora of dropped passes did little to enhance the game.
It was left to visiting player-coach Scott Pendlebury to bring matters back on keel with a side-stepping run to the side of the uprights, leaving stand-off Dan Belcher to add the extras.
Warriors scrum half Andy Robinson replied in kind by breaking clear and sprinting to the line for a fine effort he converted himself to restore the advantage to 10-6 at the break.
Wibsey resumed with a great more vigour and were rewarded when Fontaine latched on to a Robinson offload to stretch out for his brace.
A bout of innocuous pushing and shoving saw Wibsey loose forward Harry Hall and Clayton hooker Lewis Judson earn a lecture, before home stand-off Ryan Smith split the cover defence to cross at the posts.
Centre Phil Brain then fended off a number of poor tackles as the Villagers’ defence wilted – and he inflicted further punishment by intercepting on his own line to race the length of the field for his second try.
Substitute forward Jamie Waterman was pulled down a metre short and Smith will never score an easier try than his double when he found himself in acres of space.
The ever-dependable Pendlebury stemmed the tide with a simple grubber to enable Goodchild to pounce in the corner.
But prop Mike Kite then completed the hosts’ tally by taking advantage of tired legs, with Robinson kicking his fifth goal of a productive afternoon.
A final flurry of bustle late into injury time resulted in Warriors packman Ross Simpson and visiting loose forward Jason Woolham being shown yellow cards.
And when Robinson made his opinions known, he quickly joined them.
