Wibsey Warriors were the toast of Odsal today after they celebrated a momentous cup double.

The first team stormed to victory in the Jack Senior Memorial Bradford Cup final after the reserves had earlier won the Hudson Foster Supplementary Cup.

The Warriors set off like a house on fire in the showpiece event against Birken-shaw, using the Grattan Stadium pitch to maximum effect to post 14 tries.

Wibsey were on the board after just three minutes when a ball-steal by stand-off Andy Robinson allowed Nick Fontaine to dance his way in at the corner.

Five minutes later, it was 8-0 when full back Mike Derrick found himself in the clear from a scrum and cruised three quarters of the pitch to touch down.

Birky struggled to contain a rampant Warriors side and it was no surprise when a cross-field move saw centre Phil Brain dive over unopposed. There was no let-up as the Warriors went further in front when Robinson found Fontaine, whose off-load was collected by Steve Redman to give him a clear run to the line.

Birky battled hard with forward Benoit Rogers to the fore and hooker Matt Honeysett marshalling the defence. So it was just reward when prop Shaun Godfrey picked up a slip pass from Ross Grattan to crash over.

Honeysett added the goal and Birky had a glimmer of hope at 18-6. However, the Warriors ended the half strongly and a Nick Walker try gave them a 22-6 lead at the break.

Any thoughts of a Birky comeback were quickly dispelled when Redman raced in for his second, which were later followed by further tries from Brain (3), Fontaine (2), Derrick, Harry Hall and Carl Walker. Birky added a consolation when Honeysett dived over close to the posts.

It was also a glory day for Wibsey Warriors A as they beat a spirited Queensbury A side 30-18 in the Hudson Foster Supplementary Cup final.

Wibsey’s lively hooker Brad Tattersall broke the deadlock when he dived over after 13 minutes and Lewis Barrett added the extras.

Five minutes later, it was 10-0 when a sweeping move saw Ryan Isaac’s pass find winger Paul Jennings, who crashed over in the corner.

The 27th-minute sin-binning of forward Liam Mitchell for a professional foul gave Bury the initiative and they used it to good advantage when Barney Bland collected a pass from Ash Ryan to score, stand-off Tom Middleton converting.

Bury went 12-10 in front early in the second half when a break by Middleton saw supporting winger Tony Clarke over to score, Middleton converting.

However, the Warriors hit back with two tries in ten minutes from Mitchell and Tattersall.

A final touchdown from Luke Brooks, converted by Andy Garman, ended Bury’s brave resistance but they still managed to post a further try when Andrew Barraclough took a neat, short pass from Michael Boocock to step over.
