Wibsey Warriors gave the mighty Queens a tremendous arm wrestle before falling to an admirable defeat in the final at the Dewsbury Rams Stadium on Bank Holiday Monday.
The Warriors started as underdogs against the BARLA National Cup holders but they were desperately unlucky to see scrum half Ryan Smith hauled down inches short in the opening exchanges.
Loose forward Harry Hall suffered a similar fate before full back Mike Derrick narrowly failed to cross after a stunning break from prop Mark Kendal in a scoreless first half.
The Leeds side got the scoreboard rolling on the restart with an unconverted try and they looked to be well on their way when man of the match James Brown went over shortly afterwards.
Wibsey clawed their way back when Derrick shot under the posts, leaving stand-off Andy Robinson to tag on the extras before Queens restored their advantage with another six points.
A smart interchange of passing between centre Nick Walker and Nick Fontaine was only thwarted by a desperate Queens scrambling defence with seconds left on the clock and it was the Warriors who earned the plaudits at the end of a game which the Queens staff described as their “hardest of the season by a long way”.
Wibsey Warriors A made it an unwelcome double with a 10-6 defeat against St Josephs A in the Supplementary Cup final.
Once again the score was 0-0 at the break. Paul Jennings raced over from 70 metres to open the Wibsey total and Matt Cumberworth converted before Joes inched their way to a close victory. The Warriors had four tries disallowed in an end-to-end thriller.
Clayton keep second spot in the Championship after the 22-22 draw at Ossett Trinity. Simon Giles posted a brace, with solo efforts coming from Callum Dinsdale and Phil Redgrave, with Jason Woolham slotting over three conversions.
In Division One, West Bowling A lost a high-scoring match 48-30 at Dearne Valley, with touchdowns shared between Ryan Patchett, Phil Munroe, Brett Greenwood, Matt Tumelty and Ben Kelly.
Birkenshaw came unstuck 40-26 at Birstall Victoria. Andy Hirst claimed a try on his comeback while centre Tim Menel ran in a hat-trick.
