Queensbury 26 Clayton 16

(After extra time)

Queensbury overcame Clayton 26-16 in extra-time to clinch the Jack Senior Memorial Cup in an epic encounter at Odsal Stadium.

Clayton took an early lead with a Danny Belcher penalty before Bury hit back with a fine effort after centre Gareth Hobson found scrum half Carl Smith with an overhead pass to squeeze in near the corner.

A sweeping run from wingman Luke Brearcliffe then set up field position for hooker Matt Galtress to power over and Smith added the extras, leaving full back Belcher to add another penalty in order to close the half 10-4 in Queensbury's favour.

Clayton prop John Parkinson was soon over for a power try on the restart when he twisted his way to the whitewash and then was held up over the line, unable to ground the ball, shortly afterwards.

Bury stand-off Steve Eyles was quick to take advantage of a fumble to restore the lead, with Smith again on target with the extra two.

Parkinson earned the Jack Turner man of the match award when he repeated his earlier exploits and Belcher kicked the touchline conversion to send the match into overtime at 14-14.

Belcher was on target with a further penalty but Smith spotted a gap to put centre Trevor Stead over and the alert Brearcliffe collected a kick through to sprint in for another. Substitute Johnny Feather added both goals to put the trophy in Bury's grasp at last.

Fortunes were reversed in the Hudson Foster Supplemen-tary Cup final also played at Odsal on the same day as Clayton A beat Queensbury A 16-10.

Centre Lee Baron gave Bury A first blood when the ball was flashed wide but the Villagers hit back with the best try of the match when stand-off James Waddington danced through and came off both feet to beat full back James Baziw.

Man of the match Waddington was again to the fore when loose forward Danny McDonald dived over the chalk which, together with two conversions from loose forward Phil Redgrave, saw Clayton change ends 12-4 up.

Second-row forward Chris Baker roared over on the resumption but a serious leg injury delayed the game for 20 minutes when Clayton substitute Gary Peckover was unable to be moved until an ambulance attended.

Bury prop Chris Cannon barged his way to the line when the game got under way again, with Brett Marriott adding the extras, but Clayton withstood the late pressure to collect the silverware.
