West Bowling A gave Division One promotion contenders Westgate Wolves a scare before going down 36-18 as the return of freezing temperatures contributed to a reduced Pennine League programme.

Bowling battled hard against a strong Wolves outfit but the home side’s extra pace and power secured both points.

Lively Aaron Chappell took the man of the match award with an outstanding display for Bowling.

Young prop Jason Rolls got himself on the score sheet, along with veteran half back Mark Dunning, while Andrew Padgett completed the scoring for the visitors. Dunning and Padgett also shared three goals.

Bottom club Wyke were unable to break their duck against table-toppers Slaithwaite Saracens, losing 44-4.

Wibsey Warriors kept up the pressure on Division Two leaders Brighouse Rangers with a comfortable 30-14 home win against Stanningley A.

Bank Top Harriers inflicted a crushing 94-0 defeat on Moldgreen. Had the contest been in the boxing ring, the referee would surely have stopped it at the midway point with the visitors well on top at 48-0.

Centre Jason Gelder stole the show with five tries and winger Mark Bailey helped himself to four, while Bob Brown was outstanding to bag a massive 14 goals.

Other scorers were centre Simon Giles, full back Michael Hustler, prop Mark Brown, second-rowers Craig French and Tom Leach plus loose forward Luke Harps.

Victoria Rangers and Dudley Hill A played out a Division Three thriller, with the two sides inseparable after 80 minutes. It finished 28-28 and the local rivals certainly deserved a point apiece.

Queensbury A demonstrated a calmness under pressure as they edged a tight Division Five affair against Meltham All Blacks 12-10.

Handling was tricky on a heavy, muddy pitch but Queensbury drew first blood when a sweeping move saw winger Luke Barrett dive in at the corner.

Michael Boocock’s excellent conversion extended the lead but the All Blacks hit back just before half-time to peg the score back to 6-4.

Meltham then took the lead and things were looking desperate for Queensbury before prop Brett Marriott crashed over to level the scores.

With nerves jangling, Boocock held his nerve to secure a second win in consecutive games for the Bradford side.

Odsal Sedbergh A beat South Bradford 24-0 in a fierce Division Seven derby encounter.

Josh Tordoff bagged a couple of tries, while Ben Fleming, Martin Southwell and Lee Birkett picked up one each. James Sharp helped himself to two goals.

Both Bradford Dudley Hill and West Bowling had their BARLA NATIONAL CUP ties postponed due to the weather on Saturday and they have been rescheduled for this coming weekend.
