Last season's beaten finalists Queensbury made a shock exit in the preliminary round of the Jack Senior Memorial Bradford Cup against neighbours Bank Top Harriers.
Premier Division Bury, who have dominated the competition in recent years, always knew that the Harriers would be a hard nut to crack, despite the fact that they are two divisions lower in the Pennine League hierarchy.
Bank Top failed to disappoint, taking the lead in the tenth minute on the way to a 12-10 triumph when captain Jason Gelder took advantage of some hard graft from the outstanding Clem Itowa to cross at the posts.
A well-worked move from Paul Priestley put Craig French en route to the whitewash, which, together with two conversions from Bob Brown, gave Bank Top a 12-0 half-time lead. Bury came back strongly in the second stanza with a six-pointer from Brett Marriott, and a late effort from prop forward Angelo Ricco ensured a nail-biting finale to a cracking match played with consummate skill in atrocious conditions.
Wyke clearly had the bit between the teeth after recent criticism regarding their commitment when they travelled to King Cross Park.
The black and whites came up trumps with a well- deserved 21-8 success to get their Pennine League Division One aspirations back on track.
Second-row forward Andy Queenan started the ball rolling, soon followed by another effort from wingman John Rayner.
Evergreen stand-off Craig Hillam added all the extras and a penalty to put them into the sheds 14-0 up. Wyke’s defence was severely tested as the Halifax side staged a revival but a crafty drop goal from Hillam, who also added the final conversion to a late try from centre Alan Binns, ensured the spoils.
Eleven-man Queensbury A faced an uphill struggled even before the kick-off when they travelled to Drighlington A in the first round of the Andrew Bennett Memorial Trophy.
A first-half try for hooker Neil Hobson, converted by Rory Brooke, made the score 14-6 to Drighlington at half time.
When full back Kelvin Daulat intercepted a loose pass midway through the second half and scored in the corner, a shock looked on the cards, but Bury understandingly tired in the final stages and their opponents scored two late tries to seal the tie.
Division Four leaders Wibsey Warriors decision to switch their game to Odsal Rec proved a fruitful one as they notched a resounding 56-8 win against Sheffield Hillsborough Hawks.
All the three-quarters - Mike Derrick, Chris Adams, Steve Redman, Phil Brain (2), Nicky Walker (2) and Nick Fontaine (2) reached the chalk, Andy Robinson completing the rout with two touchdowns and six conversions.
