Clayton's under-12s were pushed all the way by Huddersfield Sharks before booking a place in the semi-finals of the West Riding Youth League Supplementary Cup.
The Sharks twice cancelled out converted Clayton tries but Matthew Crabtree finally crossed to settle the rain-soaked tie 16-12.
Handling was difficult in the atrocious conditions as both sides battled with the elements and a heavy pitch.
But Clayton showed great early resolve in defence and their reward came when powerful second-rower Jordan Moore went over for the first try, with Cian Timmins kicking the conversion.
Clayton continued to dominate possession but then paid the penalty for poor handling as Huddersfield make a rare break to level the scores at the interval.
The second half continued in much the same pattern and midway through a clever kick from scrum half Timmins forced a knock-on and influential loose forward Aaron Levy capitalised, with Timmins again adding the extras.
Another handling error led to the Sharks equalising again but this was to prove short-lived as Clayton upped the ante going into the last quarter of the game.
After great momentum from the forwards, the ball was offloaded to supporting centre Crabtree and he crossed for the decisive try.
