Bradford ARL Hudson Foster Supplementary Cup final: Queensbury A 20 Wyke A 4
MAN of the match Rob Hawthorn posted two touchdowns to ensure Queensbury A retained the trophy against plucky Wyke A in the Odsal curtain-raiser.
Wyke hung on by the skin of their teeth as Bury laid siege early doors and only escaped going behind when stand-off James Cullen managed to shoulder charge centre Darren Brown into the dead-ball area as he was about to touch down in the corner.
Bury hit the front when second-row forward Leighton Ruff's sleight of hand fooled the cover, and scrum half Robson Moore added the extras.
The blue and whites were then denied when wingman Nat Burn was recalled for a forward pass en route to the chalk, and Wyke had to rely on brave full back Brett Grey to keep them in the game as waves of attacks tested their resolve to the full.
The intense pressure told, however, when Burn successfully crossed at the flag to see Bury into the sheds 10-0 with all still to play for at the interval.
But Wyke went further behind on the restart when stand-off Hawthorn went over but they struck a purple patch when substitute forward Aaron Priestley made inroads into the Bury rearguard, setting up the chance for prop forward Stevie Richardson to spot a gap on the blindside and power his way to the whitewash.
Bury were in no mood to let matters slip, though, and the appearance of Brett Marriott from the bench brought the necessary vim and vigour to their cause.
Even so, the belligerent Wyke pack, led by loose forward Mickey Wormald and prop Andy Naylor, refused to give an inch as the tempo was maintained.
The final hurrah was claimed by Hawthorn when he twirled out of two tired tackles to reach out and plant the ball on the line, and Marriott landed the extra two to re-emphasise that the silverware was again going to Queensbury A.
