Queensbury A 34 Victoria Rangers A 12
QUEENSBURY A shook off a resilient Victoria Rangers A to collect the Hudson Foster Supplementary Bradford Cup in a hard-fought curtain-raiser to the Jack Senior Memorial Trophy final at the Odsal Bowl.
The Vics had the better of the opening exchanges and took the lead when hooker Sam Thornton caught the defence napping with a pick up and burrow close to the line, leaving scrum half Hayden Sugden a simple conversion.
Full back Jordon Walker prevented a certain try when he hauled Bury loose forward Sam Cheney down with the whitewash beckoning but the blue and whites put the game all square when stand-off Gregg Marriott produced a smart offload under pressure to send second-row forward Ben Jackson under the uprights and scrum half Mike Boocock ensured full reward.
Centre Ash Ryan punished the Rangers further when they failed to cover a kick through and substitute forward Angelo Ricco produced sharp change of pace to add to the total.
Man of the match trophy winner Marriott sprinted over the chalk bang on the half-time whistle to allow Boocock to add his third conversion and leave Bury in clear water 22-6 ahead.
The game was put beyond the Vics' reach shortly after the restart when Marriott sent Cheney galloping through a gap and the skilful half-back put the seal on a tremendous display with a top-range pass out of the back door to find the supporting Boocock, who crossed unopposed and slotted over his second and final extra of the game.
Rangers came within a whisker when Walker was held inches short and the sprightly Sugden was duly rewarded for his colossal contribution to their cause when he collected a kick and chase and added the extra two for good measure.
The last 20 minutes resulted in a stalemate, with both defences on top, before Bury collected the cup thanks to the brilliant show from Marriott, who was superb throughout the entertaining encounter.
* Odsal Sedbergh A moved into second place in Division Six West of the Pennine League following a thumping 64-8 win over a depleted Cowling Harlequins outfit, scoring 13 tries in a one-sided game.
The headliners were prop pairing Kyle Terry and Dan Wright, who both crossed for their first tries of the season. Other scores came from Karl Read (3), Sam Hall (2), John Adams (2), Shaq Jones, Rob Bahan, Jonny Ward and Josh Briggs. The added extras were shared between Read, Ward, Luke Barnes and Dom Call.
