ODSAL Sedbergh put in a valiant display at Pennine League promotion-chasers New Earswick All Blacks before going down 32-24 in Championship One Division.
Travelling with just 14 players, Sedge showed real grit and determination to take the All Blacks to the wire.
Robert Priestley and Scott Smith scored first-half tries for the visitors and Sedge would have been more in touch at the break if Nick Chapman had not been pulled down inches short.
However, Sedge rallied magnificently in the second half and were rewarded with two excellent long-range tries from Oliver Priestley, while Sam Greenwood finished off a fine set-piece move.
But it was not quite enough in the end to secure two much-needed points for second-bottom Odsal.
Victoria Rangers' outside chance of promotion from Division One seems to have finally faded following a surprise 42-6 defeat at Ossett Trinity.
Vics would have fancied themselves to collect two points at the Wakefield outfit, given their mixed home record, but Trinity proved to be a real handful.
Rangers' solitary try came from Jamie Kerr, converted by Oscar Woodhead.
In Division Two, Wyke moved up to fourth thanks to a superb 34-22 win over Greetland All Rounders.
The victory came despite the absence of key players Simon Owen and Ryan Exley, plus the loss of skipper Ian Watkinson prior to kick-off.
High winds did not prevent Wyke from playing some good football, while their solid defence eventually proved the difference.
Teenager Calvin Barker bagged two tries, taking his tally to ten in his last five games, and he was ably supported by centre John Raynor, who also collected a brace.
Stand-off Duane Platt finished off a fine solo effort to touch down, while Shaun Godfrey completed the scoring.
Wyke coach Warren Pitman said: "We showed determination and took some of our chances very well."
West Bowling A suffered a 36-16 home defeat at the hands of the Dearne Valley Bulldogs in Division Four.
Michael Dunderdale helped himself to two tries and two goals, while other tries went to Lewis Wriggesworth and man of the match Jake Green. Martin Birbeck and Luke Whitaker also impressed for Bowling.
Queensbury B made it five in a row with their fine 36-12 win at Cowling Harlequins in Division Six West.
Try-scorers for the visitors were winger Rick Daly, Ryan Hearn, Dan Priestley and Nathan Burke. Best on the day for Queensbury were Hearn, Burke and captain Lee Baron.
