QUEENSBURY fell to a 32-16 home defeat against old rivals Upton, despite a rousing display from prop forward Sam Cheney in the Pennine League Premier Division clash at Hilltop.
'Bury fell behind to a converted touchdown from the Pontefract visitors before hitting back with a brace of tries from stand-off Josh Naylor and centre Andrew Walker for an 8-6 lead.
But Upton took full advantage of the penalty count in their favour and first use of the slope to score a further three scores and end the opening stanza 22-8 in front.
Queensbury's high hopes of rejigging the total hit the buffers on the restart when Walker, together with his opposite number, received a yellow card after a minor fracas, giving the visitors the impetus to increase their advantage by another ten points.
'Bury, inspirationally led by Cheney, responded with some hard-hitting tackles, which led to a touchdown on the hour mark from substitute Jack Evison – soon followed by an additional effort from wingman Dan Clark.
Yet it was too little, too late to prevent a defeat, despite the hosts' promise shown in the early stages as they search for a first top-flight win.
Queensbury's second string had more success with a 24-8 win at Crigglestone All Blacks in Division Three.
Centre Jason Gelder and captain Luke Cheney grabbed a brace of tries each and Ben Jackson posted a solo effort, with Scott Ratcliffe their stand-out performer.
In Division Two, both Wibsey Warriors and Wyke came home pointless from their travels.
The Warriors could only muster a try from three-quarter Mike Batty in a 44-4 loss against Hunslet Club Parkside, while Wyke fell to a 44-14 defeat against West Craven Warriors.
The black and whites, who switched the fixture following their Towngate pitch being declared unfit, put centre John Raynor over twice and full back Tim Stones carried on his notable average of a try a game this term with their final say.
West Bowling A remain in the bottom two of Division Four after failing to disturb the scoreboard in a 52-0 setback at high-flying Sherburn Bears.
