Jimmy shows that Wyke aren't on the Waine

A sparkling interception try from wingman Brett Grey was scant reward for a dogged Wyke display that ended in a gallant defeat against Doncaster Toll Bar in the second round of the Pennine League's Andrew Bennett Memorial Trophy.

Wyke switched the tie to their Manor ground, which had slightly less surface water than the Towngate pitch, and, despite enjoying the best of the opening exchanges, they fell behind when Toll Bar second-row forward Carl Mills raced clear to plant the ball at the side of the posts.

The precision kicking of scrum half Ian Watkinson put the hosts on the front foot, forcing the Doncaster side's scrambling defence into overtime to haul down prop forward Warren Pitman ten metres short.

The arrival of veteran forward Darren Barraclough from the bench gave the black and whites further impetus, and they were very unlucky to see a touchdown from full back Jimmy Waine ruled out for a forward pass in the corner.

The youngster, who was outstanding throughout, then showed his prowess by racing back into defence to produce a classic ankle tackle to prevent Carl Mills from collecting his brace.

The Doncaster outfit, who are top of the First Division in contrast to Wyke’s lowly basement location, were clearly rattled and suffered the wrath of the referee by conceding a glut of penalties for back- chatting.

They recovered their poise on the half-hour, however, when full back Steve Mills handed off in style to cross, leaving wingman Phil Harrison a simple conversion, but once again blotted their copybook when substitute forward Adrian King was lucky to stay on the field following a punch on Watkinson.

A strong burst from packman Craig Lawton on the stroke of half-time saw the mightily relieved visitors into the hutch 14-0 up.

But the black and whites made a disastrous start to the second stanza when sloppy defence gave loose forward Jim Hamilton and substitute Rob Brown the chance to canter over, with Harrison ensuring full rewards.

At 26-0, the tie was virtually in the bag but Wyke's hopes were temporarily rekindled when Grey intercepted on halfway to outrun four desperate chasers and to dive over at the flag.

Another converted try from the visitors edged them further in front but Wyke still showed their spirit when hooker Sam Kittsen burrowed over from acting half.

The end then quickly followed when the Doncaster side crossed for the final touchdown.
