Wyke travelled to face Boothtown Terriers but were unable to dent the Halifax outfit’s promotion-chasing challenge in Pennine League Division One, going down 20-6.
Wyke showed real character and determination against a side carrying a lot of firepower and a mean defence.
The loss of Barry McShera, with a broken nose, didn’t do anything to help the visitors' cause but Paul Bapty raised a cheer when he crossed the line.
Good approach play between Macca Goodwin and Aaron Priestley saw Bapty dive over for Wyke’s only try of the afternoon. The defeat sees Wyke remain perilously close to the drop zone.
In Division Four, West Bowling A were edged out 14-12 in a thrilling encounter at Dearne Valley Bulldogs.
Bowling suffered from a slow start and were 8-0 down by the end of the first quarter.
However, the away side rallied manfully, and tries from Joe and Richard Lumb respectively saw them level things with half an hour to play.
The Bulldogs responded to take the lead 14-8 before second-row forward Scott Smith cut the deficit to just two points.
Bowling's man-of-the-match award went to veteran Lee Hutchinson for a trademark display in the pack.
Wibsey Warriors cruised through to the third round of the Pennine President's Cup with a 50-0 demolition of New Earswick All Blacks.
The Warriors' superior pace and power proved too much for the York side, particularly out wide, with three-quarters Nick Fontaine and Nick Walker both scoring a brace a piece.
Jimmy Waddington also posted two tries but it was scrum half Ryan Smith who took the plaudits, crossing on no less than four occasions.
Shaun Godfrey kicked three goals, while Walker also helped himself to three conversions.
