Queensbury A 16 Victoria Rangers 4
Queensbury A celebrated a fine Hudson Foster Cup final win over fellow Pennine League rivals Victoria Rangers in a closely-fought affair.
Vics arrived with a formidable pack and a bench full of forwards looking to bulldoze the Bury outfit.
The key to Queensbury’s victory, however, was their greater mobility and pace, particularly in the three quarters.
Their defence stayed solid all afternoon and only a fine kick and collect from Luke Harps breached the Bury line.
Vics found it difficult to cope with the speed of their opponents’ play, especially around acting half-back. Bury’s three-quarters dominated the early stages and it was no surprise when full back Jay Baziw crossed to score.
Winger Darren Brown was the next to find his way to the line, exploiting the space out wide to touchdown. Bury’s scoring was complete when centre Robert Nagy showed great finishing power to dive over.
The game boiled over with ten minutes to go when a brawl erupted which saw Vics’ Micky Glenn and Bury’s John Farr ordered from the field. It wasn’t long until a second brawl broke out, this time Harps and Brown joining their colleagues on the sideline.
Bury coach Liam Ruff said: “We’re happy with our performance. Vics are a good team but our speed was the difference, particularly at the play-the-ball.”
