Jason Demetriou hailed the Cougars’ capture of Richie Barnett as “another massive statement of intent” – then revealed he is close to finalising a deal for Leeds Rhinos rookie Jake Normington.
Keighley have snapped up former Dudley Hill product Barnett from Hunslet Hawks in another notable coup following the acquisition of former Wakefield prop Michael Korkidas.
Winger Barnett, who was suspended from the game for two years in February 2008 after testing positive for a banned substance, boasts a wealth of Super League experience with Hull FC, Warrington Wolves and Salford City Reds.
Cougars coach Demetriou said: “Obviously Richie has had his suspension in the past but he’s really keen to get his career back on track at Cougar Park.
“He’s got Super League experience and it’s important to get players of Richie’s quality into the club because a lot of other clubs at Championship level have guys who have played at the top.
“For us to sign Richie is another massive statement of intent. He brings size, power and speed to our three-quarter line.
“I am excited to have Richie on board.”
Barnett, who is from Bradford, was also part of the Jamaica squad, along with Cougars players Jamaine Wray and Jy-mel Coleman, which missed out on 2013 World Cup qualification recently.
Demetriou, meanwhile, is confident of sealing a deal to bring young Leeds centre Normington back to Cougar Park again.
The Rhinos academy product made an impressive impact towards the end of last season, scoring two of Cougars’ six tries in their 32-12 final triumph over Workington.
Demetriou added: “I’m really happy with the squad I’m putting together and bringing Jake Normington to the club on loan would be another big boost.
“I need to speak to Brian McDermott before finalising things but we’re hopeful of signing him on a dual registration.
“Jake did well for us but at the same time I think he will have to step his performance levels up next year, but he’s definitely got the quality to do that.”
