Doncaster 20, Keighley 24

Cougars were accused of theft after snatching a dramatic win at Doncaster.

Jason Demetriou’s last-gasp try helped secure a somewhat undeserved three points after his side had trailed for much of the game.

And despite being happy to keep up the pressure on Championship One leaders Swinton, Demetriou admitted his side were not at their best.

“It was a good result but we stole the win,” said the Keighley player-coach.

“We weren’t good but we showed commitment and togetherness to come away with the result.

“We dropped a lot of ball and gave penalties away far too often, giving them ball over and over again.

“Defensively we were good, considering how much ball we gave away, but they scored a couple of easy tries from dummy half and I’m not happy with that. We’ll need to put in some serious work in training this week.”

Cougars paid the price for a below-par first half and trailed 14-4 at the break.

Stewart Sanderson scored within three minutes for the Dons and although Ben Sagar replied soon after, Kyle Keswick and Dean Colton both crossed before the break, Scott Spaven adding a single goal.

Ryan Smith provided the perfect response when he scored within three minutes of the restart, Chris Baines goaling, and James Hutchinson followed it with another on 47 minutes.

Baines kicked the second conversion to put Keighley ahead but their lead lasted 17 minutes before Jack Ely touched down and Spaven converted.

But that set the scene for Cougars’ late dramatics. Gavin Duffy was taken out chasing a Demetriou kick, allowing the Aussie to cross following the resultant penalty with two minutes left.

Baines kicked the decisive goal and then added another penalty kick to seal victory.
