Cougars 38, Workington 18

Keighley Cougars turned on the style again as they ran in six tries – but head coach Jason Demetriou was just as pleased with his defence.

Having put 40 points past Rochdale the week before, the hosts won their fifth game out of six in the league as they overcame fellow early pacesetters Workington at Cougar Park.

After a tight first half, which saw Craig Moss and James Feather touch down to give the hosts a 14-12 lead, Keighley took control against a side who had drawn 30-30 with Whitehaven just three days earlier.

The Cougars had no game on Good Friday and the extra rest paid dividends as they ran in four more tries through Moss, Danny Lawton (2) and Andy Shickell, with man of the match Lawton adding 14 points with the boot.

Prop Shickell’s try was the best of the lot in a move which he started from inside his own half. Luke Helliwell and Ryan Benjafield continued the attack before Shickell showed great work ethic to cross the line.

Demetriou said: “Last week, although we played well, we also conceded a lot of points.

“We worked on that this week and wingers Gav Duffy and James Hutchinson were outstanding in defence. “We didn’t want to concede more than 18 points and we have achieved that.

“With Workington playing on Friday, we had a bit of an advantage in terms of rest.

“At half-time, their completion rate was 82 per cent. We thought it would take its toll and that’s how it panned out.”
