Workington 18 Cougars 10

Barry Eaton admits his side felt they should have completed a massive double over Workington Town.

Going down only 18-10 at Derwent Park is no disgrace and the determined Cougars did claim only their third bonus point of the season today.

But they returned home from Cumbria last night believing they could have had the full spoils.

Player-coach Eaton said: "Workington probably won't play in as tough a match this season and come away with the win.

"We're really disappointed we lost. We created some really good opportunities but the rub of the green just didn't go our way.

"Oliver Pursglove had a perfectly good try disallowed when the ref brought it back for a knock-on.

"That was at 18-10 and we were having lots of pressure in the second half.

"Then Gavin Duffy tried to collect a kick with no one home. If he had have got it he's under the posts and scores but the ref ended up colliding with him and Workington finished with the ball. We were really unfortunate."

Keighley had stunned Work-ington at home in May and having produced their best win of the season over Swinton last week travelled north in high spirits.

Their fourth-placed hosts are striving for promotion from National League Two but the Cougars, down in tenth, have shown enough promise of late to give them belief against anyone.

With Brian Sutton in for the injured Greg Nicholson, they held Workington scoreless during the first quarter and trailed just 12-4 at the break.

Centre John Crawford grabbed the visitors' try while Martin Keavney and Jason Mossop responded for Town, Carl Forber adding two goals.

After the break, winger Zac Hill - on loan from Sheffield - grabbed his second in two games for the Cougars and Richard Knight converted but Workington prop Adam Sidlow also crossed for a converted score to keep them at bay.

Eaton, whose side entertain Barrow on Sunday, added: "Gavin Duffy was outstanding for us and James Feather had a fantastic first hour.

"Everyone worked hard and stuck to the task. It's just a pity we didn't get more for our efforts."
