The Cougars have netted hard-running second-rower Greg Nicholson for another season - and now hope to persuade star centre Mick Fogerty to follow suit.

Player-boss Barry Eaton is delighted that Nicholson, 22, has signed up for 2008.

He has proved a big success since joining from Featherstone Rovers over the winter, making 20 starts and scoring four tries.

"Greg's not the biggest back-rower in the world but he plays well above his weight and has been really important for us this year," said Eaton.

"He's got a very good work-rate, great attitude and has an eye for creating for his centre and winger. He just goes about his business and is just the sort of player you want in your side.

"Also, if we're more dominant in the forwards as we get more competitive, he'll be even better for us next season and we're glad he's with us again."

Eaton is now working on the prized signature of Fogerty.

Although dogged by knee problems and currently out with a wrist injury, the nine-try centre has been a revelation since getting plucked from amateurs Waterhead two years ago.

Eaton, who takes his side to Workington on Sunday, said: "I've had an initial chat with Mick and he's now talking it over with his partner.

"There's been some interest from his home-town club Oldham and it's only natural he'll explore that but we're desperate for him to stay.

"Mick's probably our best strike player, with that quality of being able to create something out of nothing. He's indicated he will stay but we'll have to see."
