LIVERSEDGE named former Bradford (Park Avenue) defender Ryan Toulson as their manager earlier this week, but he did not get off to the best start on Wednesday night.
Toulson had been in interim charge since the departure of long-serving boss Jonathan Rimmington last month, but he was only appointed permanently as player-manager on Tuesday.
From there, it was a short turnaround to Sedge’s away game against Sherwood Colliery.
Both sides have made a slow start to the Northern Premier League East Division season, but Sherwood’s 4-1 win on Wednesday moved them out of the relegation zone.
As for Toulson’s side, they are now only above the drop zone on goal difference.
It was a bizarre game between the two sides on Wednesday night, as it was still goalless midway through the second half.
Jack Dyche then gave Sedge the lead after 69 minutes, but that seemed to spark Sherwood into life.
They equalised instantly through Harry Bircumshaw, before Alexander Duhameau gave them the lead with a quarter-of-an-hour to go.
Toulson brought himself on to the pitch in a bid to turn the tide, but the ploy did not pay off, as Jacob Pearce and Carter Widdowson both scored in the final 10 minutes to seal a thumping win for the hosts.
Sedge’s near-neighbours Brighouse Town also shipped four goals on Wednesday night, as they bowed out of the West Riding County Cup at the first hurdle.
They were at home to Garforth Town, with the visitors surging into a 2-0 lead midway through the first half.
Darius Smith halved the deficit just before the break, but Garforth restored their two-goal advantage early in the second half, before adding a fourth goal on 72 minutes.
Deco Zanco had the last word, scoring a late consolation for Brighouse as they lost 4-2.
Neither Sedge not Brig suffered as heavy a defeat as Farsley Celtic in midweek however.
The Celts were in National League North action at leaders Scunthorpe United on Tuesday night and the gulf between the two sides was clear.
The home side romped to a 6-0 win, a result that leaves Farsley down in 16th, but a healthy seven points clear of the relegation zone.
