THERE was a dramatic derby-day finish last night in the West Riding County Cup, as Campion beat Steeton 2-1 in the pair’s first round clash.
The Red and Blacks also knocked the Chevrons out of the competition last year and looked well set to do so again when Josh Green put them in front five minutes before the break.
But Steeton equalised through Josh Debenham just after the hour mark, and the game at Scotchman Road looked all set to go to penalties.
But former Chevrons man Callan Parker-Wells had other ideas, as he scored Campion’s winner two minutes into second-half stoppage time.
Thackley are out though, their late comeback at Horbury Town not enough to prevent a 3-2 defeat.
The hosts were coasting at 3-0 up and though Finn Donovan and Ben Grech-Brooksbank had pulled the Dennyboys back within a goal with eight minutes still to play, they and their team-mates could not find an equaliser.
Eccleshill United also bowed out of the competition with a 3-2 defeat.
Harvey Booth’s goal ensured they were drawing 1-1 against visiting Selby Town going into half-time.
But the away side scored twice in the first 15 minutes of the second half, so Mo Farhan Subhani’s late goal was only a consolation.
A youthful Guiseley side went out with a 2-1 defeat at Armthorpe Welfare, while Farsley Celtic were in the bizarre position of having two games at the same time.
They were in National League North action last night, superbly beating Peterborough Sports 3-0 at Horsfall, but that meant they had to put out a complete second-string for their County Cup clash a few miles away with South Leeds.
Their young side also scored three goals, but South Leeds scored five to win a thriller and dump the Celts out of the cup.
Albion Sports squeezed through in the Northern Counties East League League Cup on Tuesday night, winning 5-3 on penalties at Yorkshire Amateur after a 1-1 draw.
And finally, Silsden went top of the NCEL Premier Division with a dominant 4-1 win at Winterton Rangers.
