CAMPION paid a fitting tribute to a much-missed club stalwart on Tuesday night, as they won 4-0 at home to Bradford rivals Eccleshill United.
The Red and Blacks were playing their first game since learning of the death of long-serving former club secretary Dave Keegan from cancer.
Both sides held a minute’s silence before the game and Campion seemed determined to honour the popular Keegan in style once they had kicked off.
Ewan Gregson and Aidan Kirby put the hosts 2-0 up by the midway point of the first half, then Aidan Day added a third goal on 64 minutes.
Gregson completed the rout by scoring his second goal late on, the win seeing Campion shoot up to mid-table in the Northern Counties East League Premier Division, ahead of Eccleshill on goal difference.
But leaders Albion Sports suffered a nightmare evening, as they slid to a 3-0 defeat at struggling Beverley Town.
There were a few West Riding County Cup first round ties held on Tuesday night, one of which involved Route One Rovers.
The Bradford side made it through too, coming up with a 3-1 win at Harrogate Railway Athletic.
Anees Younis put them in front from the penalty spot in the opening minute, but the hosts equalised just before the break.
Rovers captain Jonathan Mwembie restored the away side’s lead on 49 minutes, before Younis sealed victory with his second goal late on.
Silsden also made it through their first-round tie, winning 2-1 at Yorkshire Amateur.
The visitors were heavy favourites, but did not make the breakthrough until Lewis Morgan’s goal midway through the second half.
Amateur equalised with a superb free kick, before former Liversedge captain Jack Stockdill headed home Silsden’s winner six minutes from time.
Sedge were not in action themselves, but divisional and local rivals Brighouse Town were.
And they ripped up the form book in the Northern Premier League East Division, moving out of the relegation zone with a 2-0 win at Belper Town.
Belper would have gone top of the table with a home win, but Niah Payne had not read the script, scoring a spectacular opener before adding his and Brig’s second goal just after half-time.
Steeton were unfancied too in their Macron Cup first round game at Squires Gate having lost their previous eight matches.
But they played out of their skins against higher-tier opposition, racing into a 3-0 lead through Josh Debenham, Josh Coe and an own goal.
Gate scored twice to leave Steeton sweating, but Alex Stewart scrambled home a late goal to seal a 4-2 victory for the visitors.
Finally, high-flying Guiseley, who have just been drawn at Stevenage in the FA Cup first round went behind early on in their NPL Premier Division clash at Lancaster City.
But the Lions went home with a point from a 1-1 draw, after Lancaster dramatically scored an own goal seven minutes into second-half stoppage time.
