The Central Yorkshire League season concludes this weekend and although Wrenthorpe have secured the Premier Division title again, there is a basement battle royal expected with four teams fighting for survival.

Moorlands have secured a top-two position in Division One, before joining the Huddersfield League for next season, which means only one promotion place – which Ossett will fill – and just one team to be relegated.

Birstall found themselves in bottom spot after a five-wicket defeat at Townville but an outright win at home to Altofts in their final game will guarantee survival and possibly condemn their opponents to the drop.

Skipper Stewart Clifton top-scored with just 20 at Townville and although their bowlers made early inroads, Saif Ur-Rehman taking 3-24, the hosts rallied to coast home.

Joint-bottom on 36 points are Batley, bowled out for just 58 at home to Wakefield Thornes on the way to a three-wicket defeat, and they now take on Carlton hoping to pick up enough points to avoid that basement position.

Altofts are third-bottom on 40 points along with Northowram Fields, who were disappointed not to pull clear as their game at Carlton yielded just one point.

Mark Gilliver hit 71 for Northowram as they posted 208-5 but Carlton eventually overhauled that total with one ball to spare.

Moorlands are two points clear at the top of Division One and will take the title if they can get maximum points from their home game against Scholes.

But if they fail to get the six points then Ossett, 122-run winners over Methley A, will return to the top-flight as champions with a win at Oulton.

Buttershaw St Pauls were six-wicket winners over visiting Oulton as they look to finish a disappointing season in positive fashion.

Skipper Paul Carroll led the way with 37, while Paul Robinson did the early damage with 7-41 in 15 overs.

Ossett overcame Methley in a game that featured an unbeaten 97 from skipper Michael Edwards, a 7-42 return by Shoaib Latif, 60 wides and, in what bodes well for the future, seven juniors – including teenage twins Agnes and Beatrice Firth – in the Methley line-up.
