Great Horton have comfortably survived a vote that would have seen them thrown out of the JCT600 Bradford League.
An extraordinary general meeting was called tonight by the league at Pudsey Congs with one simple motion: To decide whether or not Great Horton Cricket Club should continue as members of the Bradford Cricket League.
Doubts were raised when the Ewart Street club twice failed to fulfill fixtures this season.
Great Horton’s first and second teams were both culprits, as were Windhill Seconds and Brighouse Seconds.
In a letter to all clubs, chief executive David Young stated re Great Horton: “They have failed to turn out a second team on one occasion this year and, more seriously, a first team on September 1.
“We believe this to be unprecedented in the league. We also believe it to be a very bad reflection on the league as a whole.
“We have decided to call an egm to allow the clubs to decide whether or not Great Horton should continue as members of the Bradford Cricket League.”
Last night’s vote was 21 in favour of them continuing and two against.
Great Horton’s league representative Tony Hamer explained: “Regarding the second team match against Spen Victoria, we had 11 players but three of them had played too many first-team games compared to second-team games.
“The first team match against Bankfoot on September 1, we had 11 players for both first and second teams at 3pm on the Friday teams but it was the first of the noon starts and some of the first-team players didn’t turn up in time and 30 minutes had elapsed.
“But we have had offers of sponsorship for next season and we have enough players to turn out two teams.
“One or two of our junior members will be old enough to play too.”
