Wrenthorpe have lifted the Solly Sports Heavy Woollen Cup for the fifth time in six seasons after defeating Central Yorkshire League rivals Townville by 61 runs at Liversedge.

The Wakefield club’s match-winner was off-spinner David Paynter, who took 5-25 to rip the heart out of the Townville innings after openers Tim Walton and Jonny Booth shared a stand of 58.

Until Paynter’s man-of-the-match performance, Townville looked on course to overhaul the Wrenthorpe’s 198-9.

The crucial wicket was that of Walton (51). He had just completed his half-century with his sixth four when he was bowled by Paynter.

From then on the Townville innings went into decline and they were bowled out for 137.

Fellow off-spinner Luke Patel finished with 3-21 and he ran Paynter close in the man-of-the-match considerations because he had earlier revived Wrenthorpe’s fortunes after they had slipped to 17-3.

Ritchie Bresnan (4-37) dismissed Danny Wood and Paynter, while Wade Lezar captured the prize wicket of Gary Fellows.

Patel (46) and Oliver Whittaker (33) added 92 for the fourth wicket, although both had their moments of good fortune.

Townville were to regret the chance spurned by wicketkeeper Liam Booth with the score on 35.

He looked to have got to a low edge from Whittaker off Lezar, but in his excitement he tried to throw the ball up in celebration before he had it under control and the chance went begging.

Townville would have wanted to restrict Wrenthorpe to under 150 after asking them to bat first but former Yorkshire player Bradley Parker had other ideas, making a valuable 37.
