Only seven Aire-Wharfe League matches survived the latest episode of the great English summer but there were still some significant moves in the battles for promotion and relegation.

With the first against fourth clash between Beckwithshaw and Steeton rained off in Division One, the meeting between second-placed Collingham and third-placed Burley took on even greater significance.

Accurate bowling from Ed Brown (4-17) and Neil Davies (3-31) saw the home side struggling at 75-8 but a late flourish from Stephen James (28) helped them limp to 127.

Burley looked on course for a win when David Brook (24) and Brown (31) put on 44 to take them to 80-3 but then Brown was caught and wickets started to tumble. Burley were finally bowled out for 113 with Toby Jacklin picking up 5-21.

It was Burley’s first defeat since losing to Collingham in early June and leaves them eight points back from the 66 shared by the top two with three matches left.

At the other end of the table, Ben Rhydding are seven points off safety after their match with Thackley was rained off while events elsewhere reshuffled the relegation-threatened pack.

Kirkstall took five points off Follifoot to move above their opponents, and Bilton did the same against Guiseley.

A century from Chris Peareth took Bilton to 228-3 before they declared but there was little response from the Guiseley batting.

Wickets tumbled rapidly as they subsided to 25-6 and it took a defiant seventh-wicket stand of 34 from Dave Pennett and Robert Butterfield to earn them a point.

With Adel already relegated, Ben Rhydding fill the next spot with 35 points, followed by Guiseley and Follifoot on 42, then Thackley (43), Bilton (44) and Kirkstall (45).

The most exciting finish came in the match with the least at stake.

A stand of 84 in 46 balls between Matt O’Grady (64no) and Ricky Halloran (20no) took Otley to 191-7.

Adel responded with spirit and reached the final ball needing six to win and Shoaib Shaikh on strike having scored 99. He heaved one towards the boundary but was caught and the visitors had to make do with two points.

The abandonment of Division Two’s showdown between leaders Harden and second-placed Pool gave Rawdon the chance to move into the promotion spots if they could get the better of fourth- placed Green Lane.

Ryan Gladwin top-scored in Rawdon’s 164-9, with Michael Slater taking 4-35.

Phil Atkinson (43) gave Lane a solid start and Davin Charleston hit an unbeaten 46, taking his tally to 199 in his last three innings without losing his wicket, to clinch victory.

So Harden lead with 71 points, followed by Pool (68), Rawdon (64) and Green Lane, waiting to pounce if others slip up, on 62.

Danny Bott (52) top-scored in Ilkley’s 166-7 and Jeremy Batty followed up his unbeaten 30 with a match-winning 5-6 spell as Bardsey were dismissed for 104.

Third-placed Tong Park Esholt restricted Division Three leaders Colton to 187-9, with Nadeem Hanif and Mick Scott each picking up three wickets.

Things looked bad for the visitors when they collapsed to 24-5 but they were saved by a gutsy, unbeaten half-century from Ross Todd, and the weather, each side gaining just one point.

In the only match in the division to reach a positive result, Horsforth managed to take two points at Woodhouse, which moved them within one point of Skipton in the race to avoid re-election.
