Yorkshire’s young team ended a disappointing Clydesdale Bank 40 campaign with a convincing defeat against Warwickshire in damp and dark conditions at Scarborough today.

Chasing a Duckworth-Lewis target of 214 in a match reduced to 29 overs per side by rain, Yorkshire lost by 55 runs after being dismissed for 158, with all-rounder Richard Pyrah unable to bat after injuring his left hand, which he broke earlier this season, falling awkwardly in the field.

Having slumped to a disappointing Friends Life t20 final defeat to Hampshire in Cardiff less than 48 hours ago and with an important championship match against Gloucestershire starting tomorrow, Yorkshire decided to rest a number of senior players and field a young side led by Gary Ballance for the first time, which included 18-year-old debutant Jack Leaning, the son of former York City goalkeeper Andy.

Deprived of Pyrah’s experience, Yorkshire’s attack struggled in the field after winning the toss and deciding to bat first, with Tim Ambrose and Darren Maddy sharing an 89-run stand in ten overs that propelled Warwickshire to a winning total.

Former England wicketkeeper Ambrose finished unbeaten on 87 off 64 balls, including a six and nine fours.

With light fading as Yorkshire began their reply, any hopes of victory were effectively ended after they slipped to 6-2 with Neil Carter dismissing Adam Lyth and Joe Root en route to claiming 4-16.

Ballance did his best to guide Yorkshire to a famous victory by hitting 68 off 50 balls, including four fours and five sixes, but Warwickshire’s victory was sealed when he was caught on the mid-wicket boundary with seven of Yorkshire’s overs remaining.

The next time Yorkshire wear their one-day uniform will be in the qualifying stages of the Champions League, where they face Trinidad and the winner of Sri Lanka’s domestic tournament in Johannesburg and Centurion on October 9 and 10.

Should they negotiate that stage, they face the far stiffer task of getting past Sydney Sixers, holders the Mumbai Indians, the Highveld Lions and the Chennai Super Kings.
