Central Yorkshire League Premier Division duo Wrenthorpe and Townville warmed up for their Heavy Woollen Cup final clash with victories at Wakefield Thornes and Batley respectively but the torrential downpour at Roberttown Lane on Sunday soon cooled them down.

With the pitch resembling a lake, the match was subsequently abandoned, with Wrenthorpe on 59-2 off 13 overs. That was a huge disappointment for Liversedge Cricket Club, who have a great track record for staging such events, but at least they are able to host the re-arranged game on Sept-ember 2.

On the league front, Liversedge kicked off the weekend with a fine win at second-placed Oulton in Division One where they were unlucky not to take maximum points after reducing the home side to 193-9, chasing 248-8.

That result leaves Sedge in mid-table position ahead of tomorrow’s game at home to Wakefield St Michaels.

Moorlands, at East Leeds tomorrow, still lead the table after a 78-run win over Methley A but Ossett have closed the gap on Oulton to just one point after a 145-run win at Buttershaw St Paul’s. The Bradford side slipped to fourth-bottom after being shot out for just 107.

In the Premier Division, a half-century from Connor Williams took his league run tally to 728 for Birstall . Their three-wicket win at Northowram Fields lifted them out of the relegation zone and set them up nicely for tomorrow’s clash with Wakefield Thornes at Leeds Road.

Batley, at leaders Wrenthorpe tomorrow, slumped to the foot of the table after the defeat by Townville.

Northowram occupy the second relegation spot while, at the other end of the table, New Farnley, at home to second-placed Methley in their next game, remain closest challengers to the top two, despite a surprise defeat at Carlton.
